Scooter-Wielding Grandma Stops Robbers Wearing Clown Masks Who Had Machetes

A Houston-area grandmother is being hailed as a hero after she beat down two armed robbers outside of her home. Aretha Cardinal and her husband, Joseph Nelson, were sitting in a truck outside their house when Jose Lugo and Luis Jimenez approached them and demanded money. The two men were wearing clown masks and threatened the couple with machetes.

"I'm sitting here talking to my wife and the next thing I know, when I look up, I see somebody running towards me with this white clown mask on and a machete," Nelson told KTRK. “He reached his hand through the window, put it on my throat like this and I'm like, 'Dude, you serious, you trying to rob me with a machete?'"

Nelson managed to get control of the weapon while Cardinal picked up her granddaughter's scooter and started chasing the pair. She started beating one of the men with the scooter and managed to detain the two men until the police arrived.

"It was really scary, but it was like, it was either us or them, you know, and not us," Cardinal said. "You not gonna steal no money. We ain’t got no money.”

Both men were taken into custody and were charged with aggravated robbery. They are being held in Galveston County Jail on $100,000 bond each.
