Man Trades In Rare Nintendo Cartridge For $13,000

Sometimes it pays to be a hoarder, or at least to hold on to some of your old toys and games, especially Nintendo cartridges. It turns out, some of them can be worth insane amounts of money, and a used game store in Seattle called Pink Gorilla Games just got their hands on one. It's the ultra-rare Nintendo World Championships 1990 cartridge that was in a box among other games. They tweeted out a photo of it with the caption, "Just traded in! Not joking."

IGN.com got more to the story from the store's owner, Cody Spencer, who explained:

"The guy came in not knowing at all what the cartridge was worth. He was pretty blown away with the offer. I made sure to explain to him what the item typically sells for and what we would offer him and why… The seller had no idea what it was nor where he got it. It sounds like he collected NES games a little bit when collecting NES games had yet to grow in popularity."

The offer? $13,000.

Apparently the cartridge was given out to the winners of the 1990 Nintendo World Championships, which saw players compete in popular games. The cartridge boasts altered versions of Rad Racer, Super Mario Bros. and Tetris. Some contest winners won the cartridge as well. Only a few hundred Nintendo World Championships 1990 are believed to ever have been made.

It didn't take long for Pink Gorilla to find a buyer themselves. While they didn't reveal who it is or how much that person paid, in good condition, the game could sell for upwards of $25,000, though Spencer said this cartridge "wasn't in the best condition."

In a YouTube video, Spencer told the whole story of the game and how he wound up with it.

Make sure to check all your games to see if you've got a treasure amongst them!
